Discovering the configuration of a Windows NT server
If you've ever been assigned responsibility for a server after it's been up and running, you know how hard it can be to determine how the server is configured and what software is installed on it.
One of your first steps should be to figure out whether or not anyone has installed any Service Packs on the server. You can find the current Service Pack version by running Windows NT Diagnostics.
(You can also find the current Service Pack version by choosing Start | Run, and typing winver in the Open text box.)
Next, you should determine how the server's hardware is configured. You can use the Network properties dialog box to identify the network services, protocols, and adapters installed in your server.
You can use Disk Administrator to identify the hard drives and their partitions.
Finally, use Server Manager as a quick way to identify the shares on your server.
In Server Manager, select the server in the list of computers in your domain.
Now choose Computer | Shared Directories.
You'll see a dialog box with a list of all of the share names on your server-- along with the corresponding paths.
